"Liberty through darkness"
- Mantra of the Knights of Resurgence

Welcome to the crime-ridden world of RESURGENTS.

The story of Resurgents follows Kaevír and Storm; among the four founders/leaders of the now defunct, infamous and shadowy group of modern-day warriors named "The Knights of Resurgence".

These "Resurgents" were responsible for saving Aurelia from a malevolent cult during a great war five years’ prior, led by a man named Alistaire Crowe, aka “Kraenyx”—the primary antagonist of the Resurgents universe.

This was a war that the Resurgents won, however it came at a great cost, as almost all of the Resurgents were wiped out … and despite the fact that Kraenyx is also now dead, his influence is still felt all throughout the continent of Aurelia.

Now working as vigilantes by night, Storm and Kaevír have become known as "The Ghosts of Lexton City", and are singlehandedly responsible for taking down various crime syndicates and terrorists operating within the corrupt Lexton. However, their actions come from a wounded place, living with survivor’s guilt and PTSD for how they failed to save their fellow Resurgents in arms.

Dive into the dark, gritty world of Resurgents through the eyes of these vigilantes, as we explore their fractured minds and their equally shattered city.  Where eventually, Storm and Kaevír must become something more—something far greater than they ever were before—because vigilantism can never bring meaningful change to the world. The two must learn how to put aside their nihilism and reconnect with their humanity, become anchors of light and hope, in order to usher in a much more healed age in Aurelia’s society.

ABOUT RESURGENTS
Created by Jay and his best friend Storm, Resurgents is a gritty vigilante drama based in the city of Lexton located in a fictional country named; Aurelia.

The Resurgents universe was conceived in the year 2013, back when Storm and Jay were teenagers, the two collaborating with each other to not only write various stories set in this world, but also develop its extensive lore and characters.

Fast-forward a decade later, in the year 2023. Jay and Storm decided that they wanted to finally share Resurgents with the world instead of just keeping it to themselves, so they began working on short stories to release onto the internet that explores various aspects of the Resurgents universe such as the characters, lore, and themes, setting up the exposition and foundations necessary for a much larger-scale project soon to come.

Overall, the history of Resurgents throughout the past decade has been incredibly extensive. While at first, the Resurgents universe was a private project created between Jay and Storm just for fun, writing dozens of stories vastly covering many genres from grimdark action to bizarre comedy, now it has begun the process of becoming so much more. With plenty of new Resurgent projects now in the pipeline.

The second entry in this series of short stories is none other than Remnant Malevolence; taking place not long after the events of Remnant Ghosts.

This story focuses on expanding the world and lore of Resurgents little by little, giving you a taste of what's to come, yet still leaving most mysteries up to speculation, as we follow Storm, Kaevír, and Jason Kirisaki who are on a mission to put a stop to a secret, malevolent threat hiding within Lexton's rundown suburbs.

REMNANT MEMORIES

The third Resurgent short story takes place not long after Remnant Malevolence, inside the mind of Kaevír while he’s unconscious and having a near-death experience.

Remnant Memories is a psychological and introspective character study that follows Kaevír as he navigates the looping labyrinth of his own mind, reliving the events of his traumatic past and unveiling to us how he became the man we know him as today.

More importantly, we learn how the lifestyle of a vigilante has left him scarred, sullied, carving wounds into his own soul that have left him permanently changed. Witnessing the impact of those wounds for ourselves as he confronts eerie, monstrous manifestations of his own subconscious and shadow self.

THE CHARACTERS

STORM
Named after Resurgents’ co-creator, Storm is one of the two founding members of the Knights of Resurgence turned vigilante. He is highly skilled in stealth tactics and infiltration, however, he is more of a long-range fighter compared to Kaevír who prefers to get up close and personal.

Compared to Kaevír who is very laidback and witty, Storm is the more professional and stoic of the two, presenting himself with a calm and collected confidence. Storm is also a very practical and utilitarian person, everything he wears or brings into his missions are strictly focused on purpose and function.

He is known for his sniper-like intuition, which is why he is most suited for long-range encounters. He usually provides backup support and specialises in picking off his enemies from afar one by one with his rifle in quick succession. He is also a very technologically gifted individual, helping out with the technical design of Resurgent weaponry, gadgets, and is an experienced engineer in charge of the upkeep of most of the Resurgents’ vehicles.

KAEVÍR
One of the two founding members of the Knights of Resurgence turned vigilante, Kaevír is a highly skilled former Spec Ops soldier who uses his expertise in stealth to his advantage; a silent predator who stalks the enemy, striking swiftly from the shadows, before vanishing back into the darkness all within mere seconds.

Kaevír has a rebellious, sassy, sarcastic and cocky exterior with a laidback devil-may-care attitude which he uses as a mask to hide how broken he truly feels inside. He also has a strong sense of justice and is a very dedicated person with an instinctual desire to protect others.

He is also very creative and a highly visual person, responsible for creating almost all of his own gear and helping his fellow Resurgents with the creations of their own equipment. However, within the Resurgents’ inner circle, he’s most well-known for being the man responsible for designing the visual aesthetic that the Resurgents are most commonly recognised for, most notably the Resurgent Emblem.

FINNIX
The Resurgents’ mysterious and elusive getaway driver, Finnix was one of the very first people to become a “Resurgent”. Alongside Ezio, another ally of the Resurgents, he is also an expert hacker who helps provide backup support and Intel for Kaevír and Storm while they’re in the field.

Outside of the Resurgents’ inner circle, most have never met him or even know what he looks like—he’s a very private individual. He is mainly known for his obsession with lemurs and the colour green, while also being very fixated on collecting vintage fans. Other than that, not much else is known about him, and his existence in itself is highly secretive.

RESURGENT TRIVIA / BEHIND THE SCENES
1) The Resurgent emblem was inspired by Crescent Moons.

2) The Resurgents Universe was influenced by John Wick, The Raid duology, Batman, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, and the original Watch_Dogs video-game.

3) Resurgents was originally a bizarre, absurdist action-comedy until 2019, when Jay and Storm decided to reboot the Resurgents universe and make it more grounded, darker and psychological.
This was because the artwork they created for the original Resurgents was darker and more grungy than what the series actually was, and they wanted to create a version of Resurgents that was more in line with their grittier concept art.
Plus, they also believed that the premise of Resurgents had the potential to become something more profound.

4) Resurgents has supernatural elements to its universe, however, they are kept very subtle and in the background.
This is due to the fact that the original version of Resurgents had magic in it and when rebooting the Resurgents universe, Storm didn't want to have any supernatural elements, in order to remain as grounded as possible.
However, Jay wanted to keep the supernatural elements because he believed that many aspects of Resurgent lore wouldn't make any sense without them.
As a compromise, they decided to leave it up to interpretation whether or not the supernatural actually exists, peppering in clues throughout the various Resurgent stories that support both sides of the debate.

5) The design of Kaevír's mask was inspired by a mask worn by "Gale Seraph"; another character created by Jay Merrick, who is the protagonist of his novel; "Shattered Prophecy".
As for Storm, his mask was inspired by Iron Man's helmet, because the real life Storm is a huge fan of the character.

6) As a fun little "Easter egg", Jay Merrick's wolf emblem is engraved into the grip of Kaevír's signature handgun. As for Storm, an abstract emblem is engraved into his handgun, which is inspired by a logo that Jay designed for the real life Storm back in 2013 to use as a part of his gaming profile. On a side note, Storm's gun is inspired by the one used by Agent 47 from the video-game "Hitman", developed by IO Interactive, because Storm is a fan of the character in real life.

7) Kaevír's signature leather jacket is based on a jacket that Jay owns in real life, which he designed himself and commissioned a leather jacket company to make it for him. This was Jay's way of incorporating a piece of himself into the character.

8) The character of Finnix is inspired by one of Jay and Storms' friends, and shares many of the same characteristics such as having a love of lemurs and collects vintage fans as a hobby.

9) The name of the fictional country "Aurelia" is derived from the Latin word aureus, meaning "golden". As for Lexton, the city is named after one featured in a comic book that Jay and his friends created as a part of a school assignment back in primary school.

10) Similarly to Aurelia, the name Kaevír is also derived from a Latin word; "saevire", which means to be angry/ferocious.

11) The reason why the Resurgents wear masks is because back when the Resurgents universe was first created, Storm and Jay used to regularly play a video-game with their friends named; "PAYDAY 2", where every player wears their own custom masks. Jay and Storm became so attached to their mask designs, so invested in them, that they eventually decided to alter Resurgent lore in order to make it so that Resurgents to wear masks too during their missions.
